Hit-and-run driver up for culpable homicide

pedestrian in a road accident.
Stanford Mushangwe (37) of Number 7 Ceris Road Celdon pleaded not guilty to culpable homicide charges when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Olivia Mariga.

Mushangwe is being accused of hitting Ms Linda Zindi who was crossing Seke Road at night near Prince Edward Waterworks.
Ms Mariga deferred judgment in the matter to July 5 after hearing arguments from both parties.

When the trial opened, Mushangwe pleaded not guilty to the charges saying he saw an object flying in front of his vehicle and he sped off not knowing he had killed someone.
Mushangwe said the place has a history of mysterious incidents and that he thought it was either a ghost or a stone thrown by car-jacker.

The State is also accusing Mushangwe of failing to stop after being involved in an accident, failing to render assistance to the complainant and failing to report an accident to the police within 24 hours.
Appearing for the State, Mr Luke Mutupe alleges that the incident occurred on May 31 last year but Mushangwe was arrested three months later after the police received an anonymous letter implicating him in the death of Ms Zindi.

On the day in question, it is alleged Mushangwe was driving a Nissan vehicle from Seke to Harare around 9 pm when he allegedly hit Ms Zindi who was crossing the road.
Ms Zindi died on the spot and police later recovered a Nissan logo that presumably fell from Mushangwe’s vehicle when the accident occurred.

A post-mortem report compiled by a Dr Madziwa confirmed Ms Zindi died of injuries synonymous to a traffic accident.
Upon arrest, Mushangwe had already repaired his vehicle and it no longer had the dents that emanated from the accident.
