A Chiredzi motorist allegedly lost a car and other valuables all worth $5,000 to three pistol-wielding men he had given a lift in Chivhu.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident occurred on Thursday at around 6PM and the suspects are on the run.

She said the victim, Chrispen Mutandavari, 34, of Tshovani Suburb was coming from Tanzania with his unregistered Toyota Sienta vehicle when he gave the men who masqueraded as genuine travellers, a lift to Chatsworth turn off.

“I confirm receiving an armed robbery case involving three male adults who robbed a Chiredzi man of his vehicle.

“He had given them a lift and they masqueraded as genuine travellers and indicated to him that they wanted to drop off at Chatsworth junction en-route to Chatsworth area in Gutu,” said Inspector Mazula.

One passenger sat in the front while the other two occupied the back seat, she said.

The police spokesperson said Mutandavari then drove towards Masvingo road but when he arrived at the 226km peg, the trio turned against him.

“One of the two men sitting at the back indicated that he wanted to drop off since he had reached his destination. Mutandavari complied and stopped the car.

“While waiting for the men to disembark, the one who was in the front seat produced a pistol and pointed it at Mutandavari’s head.

“One of the two men at the back grabbed Mutandavari from behind by the neck and pulled him to the back seat,” she said.

The armed hijacker jumped into the driver’s seat and drove for about 15km before they dumped him in the bush.
