INTERNATIONAL chartered accounting firm, HLB Zimbabwe donated a complete rugby kit valued at $3 600 to Hillcrest College IXV’s team. HLB finance administrator, Fadzai Ruzengwe, said the company was committed to nurturing junior sport in the country and to help develop the future’s top sports personalities. The kit comprises of new design rugby jersey, tracksuit and travel bags.

Ruzengwe said it was import to inspire children into sport at junior level to develop sports at the senior level. “If we set the bar and develop our sports at schools level then slowly we will influence the growth and achievement of our various sporting disciplines at national level,” she said.

She, however, underscored the need to build a complete student, both academically and sports. Ruzengwe also urged the corporate world to play an active role in sports development.

“Sport is a multi-million dollar industry in some countries and as Zimbabwe we should aim reaching such levels. To achieve that it begins with talent identification and nurturing at grassroots level all the way up. This requires financial support,” she said.

Hillcrest College headmistress, Annie Holman, thanked HLB Zimbabwe for investing towards the school and Zimbabwe’s future sporting stars.

Holmes said such corporate support encouraged students to take sport seriously and built their confidence especially when they travel out for regional tours in South Africa.

“Corporate support is always a morale booster for us to know that we are valued as an institution. For our students it boosts their confidence going out immaculately dressed especially when they go on tours in South Africa,” she said.

Hillcrest College has over the years produced many prolific players that have represented the country in various sporting disciplines.

In rugby there are the likes of veteran Cheetahs captain, Jacques Leitao, while most recently there are the likes of Sam Musiyarira, Tinashe Gonese, Francis Mungwari and Ngoni Chibuwe who all played for the junior national side and currently pursuing professional careers out of the country.

In athletics there is sprinting ace, Ruwarashe Muzinde currently on scholarship in the United States of America as well as Masvita Mtisi, while in cricket, Tino Mawoyo, who plays for the Chevrons is also an old boy from the school.
