SPORT and Recreation Makhosini Hlongwane has congratulated Zimbabwe’s team to this year’s Confederation of Schools Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) track and field athletics competitions for defending their title in Namibia last week.
Team Zimbabwe, which was made up of National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) and National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) athletes, hauled 21 gold, 20 silver and 14 bronze medals in retaining their title.
“The Minister of Sport and Recreation would like to congratulate Team Zimbabwe for successfully defending their position in the recent Cossasa games held in Namibia,” read Hlongwane’s statement.
He said the successful defence of the title was proof enough that the country can actually win the African Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Youth Games that will be held in Angola at the end of this year.
“The team has shown us that Zimbabwe can in fact win the Region Five Games if National Sports Associations (NSAs) deploy, as they should, their best athletes for the Games due at the end of the year in Luanda, Angola,” said Hlongwane, who is also the outgoing going chairperson of the Ausc Region Five Council of Ministers.
He called on Team Zimbabwe and all NSAs to prepare fully for the Angola games so that Zimbabwe again dominates the podium.
Countries that are active in the Cossasa Games are Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe, while the likes of Angola, Mozambique, Seychelles and South Africa have not participated in the games for many years now for various reasons.
