HEAVY rains pounded Mutare last night, leaving a trail of destruction on public infrastructure.

The footbridge connecting Hobhouse and Dangamvura suburbs was severely damaged, leaving residents stranded and forced to travel long distances to access their locations.

Pupils who use the bridge daily to attend school are among those affected.

Mutare City spokesperson, Mr Charles Sadondo confirmed the damage and said council is assessing the full impact on infrastructure.

“The council’s senior management, led by the Town Clerk, is on the ground assessing the damage caused by the rains. I can confirm that the footbridge was washed away,” said Mr Sadondo.

Residents are calling for swift repairs to avoid accidents, particularly during the rainy season.

Mr George Mawere of Hobhouse urged authorities to expedite reconstruction, citing concerns for children’’ safety.
“The destruction of this bridge has a huge impact on us. We are now stranded, and worried about children safely reaching their schools,” he said.

Residents are also urging the council to address drainage issues, as last night’s spillage created a huge gully at Chikanga Shops and several other locations.

A house in Chikanga suburb was also flooded.

Chikanga Vendors chairman, Mr Robert Abuja has urged the council to clear a clogged drain in the area, warning that failure to do so could result in the market shed being swept away.

“The drain has metal screens that collect debris, blocking the flow of water. These screens are located near the bar and supermarket areas. We need an urgent response to prevent disaster,” he said.

Mr Terrence Cheromwaamba echoed Mr Abuja’s concerns, highlighting the drainage system’s inadequacies.

“Last night’s floodwater damaged my cottage and fowl run. All my property and goods are soaked. This issue has been ongoing for too long. Although the council attempted to redirect the water last year, it is clear that more needs to be done,” he said, as he worked to clear the drainage.

With the Meteorological Service Department predicting heavy rains until Saturday, the need for urgent repairs and maintenance is more pressing than ever.
