Hockey Champs a success: Chigwedere

The tournament, which started on November 30, attracted clubs from Egypt, Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria.
Defending champions Sharkia of Egypt retained their title in the men’s category after beating Trustees of Ghana 4-3 in the final.

The two teams booked their places in the finals when they finished in the top of the round robin matches that were played.

The women’s title went to Kenya’s Telkom Orange who dismissed Custom Ladies from Ghana 1-0 in the finals.

Zimbabwe fielded three clubs — Hippo Valley and Hullets in the men’s category and Bulawayo Athletic Club in the women’s section.

Hippo Valley finished fourth while Hullets and BAC came sixth in their respective sections.
Chigwedere said the championships presented local players with an opportunity to compete in a high level tournament. Firstly the tournament proved to be very successful in terms of organisation. Of course there were a few challenges but we managed to contain them and it was smooth.
