AT least 20 coaches are expected to attend an International Hockey Federation coaching clinic which starts today and ends on Saturday in Harare.
In a telephone interview from Harare yesterday, Humphrey Chigwedere the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe vice-president said Gijs Hardemane of Holland would conduct the workshop.
He said coaches from outside Harare are expected in Harare this afternoon.
“Zimbabwe has been awarded an opportunity to have an instructor seconded by the FIH. The coaching clinic is for all national team and club coaches and so far 20 have confirmed their participation. Those coming from outside Harare are expected to be here by lunch hour so that we start our programme at 2pm.
“This is more of a refresher course so that the coaches can keep abreast with international changes. Our coaches are going to benefit a lot because the Dutch are technically and tactically gifted,” Chigwedere said.
He said this was not the first time for foreign instructors to conduct coaching clinics in Zimbabwe as they have played host to others before.
“The Indians are blessed with skill and technique but the Dutch who are one of the best playing nations in the world are good in terms of technical issues.
We have had a guy from Asia and he taught our coaches different hockey techniques and now it is about time we upgrade to technical matters so that we are on the same level with the rest of the world,” said Chigwedere.
He said the clinic will be held at Arundel High School in Harare’s leafy suburb Mount Pleasant which is the only school with an astro-turf in the capital.
Chigwedere said the participants will do theory lessons in the morning with the practicals in the afternoon.
