Hold councillors to account

HARARE Residents Trust executive director, Precious Shumba, has challenged the media to interrogate the failures of Councillors seeking re-election.

Speaking during a media training workshop on election reporting, Shumba called on the media to hold Councillors accountable for their promises and actions, and to highlight the issues affecting residents.

He cited uncollected garbage and the ineffective management of waste as examples of areas where councilors had failed to deliver.

He also urged journalists to investigate trips made by the councillors relating to waste management.

Shumba stressed that elected officials should not just seek re-election, but actually deliver on their campaign promises for the benefit of the communities they serve.

“When they are campaigning, they say things they will do when they get into office.

“These councillors end up struggling with promises and lies.

“Journalists should set the tone by highlighting issues affecting residents.

“Let us also question trips they have had across the country on waste management business,” he said.
