THE country recorded 15 deaths from 12 fatal accidents and 85 injuries from a total of 132 road traffic accidents that occurred during this year’s Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.
Last year there were five deaths from four fatal accidents recorded and 29 injuries from 163 accidents.
Most accidents were due to speeding, inattention, misjudgement, reversing and overtaking errors.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said while there was a decrease in the number of road traffic accidents during the holiday, there was an increase in the number of people killed compared to the same period last year.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police informs the nation that the recorded statistics show a decrease in the number of accidents recorded during the 2023 Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Holidays compared to lady year.
“The accidents recorded dropped from 163 to 132 but deaths increased from four to 12,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
He attributed the accidents largely to speeding and overtaking errors.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so.
“Motorists should also prioritise the servicing of vehicles to ensure they are fit and secure to carry passengers or goods on the roads,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
He urged drivers to observe traffic rules and regulations to minimise road accidents.
Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) media and corporate communications officer, Ms Lucy Kuwandira said they continue to encourage motorists to exercise caution at all times.
