Holiday accidents claim 15 lives

FIFTEEN people were killed and 85 injured in a total of 132 road traffic accidents recorded during the Heroes and Defence Forces Day holidays.

In a statement, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the numbers have increased after five people were killed and 29 injured during the same period last year.

Ass-Comm Nyathi urged motorists to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations.

“The recorded statistics show a decrease in the total number accidents from 163 to 132, and an increase in the number of people killed and number injured,” he said.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so.

“Motorists should also prioritise the servicing of vehicles to ensure they are fit and secure to carry passengers or goods on the roads.

“Drivers should not speed in situations which are not safe to do so.

“Above all, drivers should adhere to all road rules and regulations in order to curb the continuous loss of lives through road traffic accidents,” said Ass-Comm Nyathi.
