GWEVEDZI INVADES THEATRE IN THE PARK

Entertainment Reporter

THEATRE in the Park is the place to be tonight in Harare for mature music lovers when Afro acoustic group, Gwevedzi, invades the joint.

Known for hosting premier jazz and Afro fusion gigs, along with theatre performances, the upmarket venue is also known for attracting multiracial crowds.

Last week, the place hosted Daves Guzha’s one man play titled “Aikaka!!!”.

After giving theatre lovers a treat, the hosts will tonight shift focus to music.

Rooftop Promotions is behind the show.

The group’s two-hour performance starts at 7pm.

In a statement, Gwevedzi spokesperson, Gladman Bvuta, confirmed the show adding that their new album titled One was almost done.

“Finally, the new album is here and we can’t wait to sample the songs for our fans.

“I think from the two albums we have this third release is not only amazing but also a good listen,” Bvuta said.

Famed for fusing Zimbabwe’s modern music with copyrights of the late icons like Oliver Mtukudzi and Leonard Dembo, the group’s music remains uniquely Afro-fusion.

Bvuta reiterated that the band’s quest is to also harmonise the people of the world through music.

The group consists of Tinashe Masangudza on guitar, Wilfred Nikisi on bass, Nyasha Murada on lead vocals/mbira and drummer Keith Musena.

The group announced their arrival, with their debut album named Tsambo, which features the hits Vhunze, Daira Ndikuone and Bvuma Tiyemerane.

The second album is titled Nhungo and carries the crowd favourites Malaicha and Ndinouya. Gwevedzi have made Theatre in the Park their home having performed there for more than three times in the last two years.

To date, the group has staged sold out gigs in Mutare, Victoria Falls, Harare and Kwekwe.

Other high-profile performances by Gwevedzi include one at the recent Jacaranda Music Festival.

The group has also staged regional shows in South Africa and Mozambique.
