SIX people died in road accidents during the just-ended Heroes and Defence Forces Holiday, marking a 60 percent decrease in the holidays’ death toll compared to the same period last year. Last year 15 people were killed in road accidents nationwide. National police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner, Charity Charamba said:
“51 people were injured this year compared to the 88 that was recorded last year. Even the number of deaths recorded was low as six people died compared to 15 last year.”
She added that the number of tickets issued for traffic offences rose from last year’s 9,198 to 11,530 and 178 vehicles were impounded this year.
She said major causes of accidents were speeding, inattentive driving, misjudging, reversing failure and failure to give way.
“Police will continue to monitor all highways and drivers are urged to be responsible on the roads,” she said.
