Holiday death toll rises to 72

A total of 98 people died over the entire festive period last year.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri said 1 777 unroadworthy vehicles were impounded in a blitz that seeks to reduce carnage, while 64 966 tickets were issued for various traffic offences.
“Since 15 December to 26 December the number of deaths recorded was 72, which resulted from 799 accidents recorded across the country. We also impounded 1 777 unroadworthy vehicles and issued a total of 64 966 tickets so far,” Supt Phiri said.

Last year, 98 people were killed while 1 090 others were injured in 1 119 road accidents recorded during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
About 2 909 defective vehicles were impounded.
Most accidents were attributed to speeding, misjudgment, lack of attention and drunken driving.

Government has urged motorists particularly transport operators to adhere to traffic rules to reduce carnage.

Police yesterday continued with their blitz and maintained visibility on most roads in Harare.
Such was the situation in other cities, towns and on major highways.
