Holiday death toll rises to 84

Police spokesperson, Superintendent Andrew Phiri said 1 939 unroadworthy vehicles were impounded due to various defects, while 64 966 tickets were issued for various traffic offences.
“From 15 December to 28 December, the number of deaths recorded is 84, which resulted from 899 accidents recorded across the country.

“We also impounded 1 939 unroadworthy vehicles and issued a total of 64 966 tickets to motorists,” said Supt Phiri.
Last year, a total of 98 people were killed while 1 090 others were injured in 1 119 road accidents recorded during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

About 2 909 defective vehicles were impounded.
Most accidents were attributed to speeding, misjudgement, lack of attention and drunken driving.

Supt Phiri urged motorists, particularly transport operators, to exercise caution and adhere to the traffic rules to reduce carnage on the country’s         roads.

He said the police were out in full force and would continue with their blitz that seeks to reduce carnage on the country’s roads.
The blitz is targeting motorists in cities and towns as well as on major highways.
