The police spokesperson for Matabeleland South Province, Sergeant Thabani Mkhwananzi said the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at a homestead in Johnsyl resettlement area.
“On the fateful day, the suspect, Marko Nyoni, who was part of a group of revellers at a village Christmas party at Johnsyl area, had a misunderstanding with one of the villagers over an undisclosed debt. The dispute attracted the attention of the complainant, Dingani Ncube (21), who then tried to intervene resulting in the two men arguing.
“Nyoni went to his homestead and came back armed with his employer’s rifle and fired at Ncube but he, however, missed him,” he said.
Some revellers managed to wrestle with Nyoni until they managed to overpower him before they disarmed him.
A report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
Sgt Mkhwananzi said the suspect would appear in court soon on charges of attempted murder.
“As police, we urge safari operators not to allow their employees to take service firearms to their homes. In fact, they should secure their firearms in a gun cabinet to avoid the recurrence of such incidents,” said the police spokesperson.
