Hollywood’s Epps shares new ideas on film production

RENOWNED Hollywood lighting designer, Christian Epps was recently in the country to share vital knowledge on the production of films.

Epps was in Zimbabwe for about a week, in attendance of the Zimbabwe International Film Festival, held in Harare, shared information on new lighting techniques and systems that would help improve the quality of local productions.

The festival which was a combined effort between International Images Film Festival for Women (IIFF) and the Zimbabwe International Film and Festival Trust (ZIFFT) was held in Harare last week.

The founder and executive director of the ZIFFT Nigel Munyathi said Epps conducted seminars on film making that benefited film makers in Zimbabwe.

“Epps conducted workshops in line with the festival’s theme, his interaction with local film makers and producers brought new ideas that will surely benefit local film makers. Epps’s visit also strengthened relationship between Zimbabwe and United States of America in the film industry,” he said.

Epps presented film project management workshops, which included sessions on practical film production process management and conducted a basic film making workshop at Young Africa Skills Centre in Chitungwiza.

Epps; career as a lighting designer spans more than 2 decades, his works for broadcast television, live theater, dance, and music videos are very much praised in the United States of America.

He has worked with renowned artistes such as the late legendary King of pop Michael Jackson, P Diddy, Jamie Fox, Shakira, Neyo, John Legend, Rihanna and Jay Z.

Epps’ determination to become a famous lighting designer pushed him to Nollywood in 2006 to 2012 in Nigeria, where he worked with Jungle Films and Nigerian Breweries to design the lighting for 2 popular realities TV shows namely Star Quest and Maltina Dance All.

Munyathi said the collaboration of IIFF and ZIFF was a magnificent move to promote cohesive and sustainable growth in the film sector.

“The resultant synergy will offer the most diverse Festival for audiences as the two combine their strengths to create a platform for excellence in film, advocacy, value addition, and engagement among the various stakeholders,” he said.
