Holy Mic Poetry Jam empowering poets

HOLY Mic Poetry Jam is hosting a poetry show on Saturday at the La Vida restaurant in Bulawayo to empower poets in the city.

The initiative is a spoken word forum that focuses mostly on poetry. It aims at giving a platform to marginalised individuals like girls, young women, people with disabilities and school children.

The founder, Chalton Moyo, said the theme for the event was inspired by the Romeo and Juliet movie.

“The theme of the event is ‘Romeo must die’ and this is inspired by the movie Romeo and Juliet. We realised that there are a number of issues in the movie apart from love that entail interracially, acceptance, inclusivity and drug use that needed to be explored,” he said.

Moyo stated that their lineup entails a number of spoken word artists and comedians.

“We have a number of spoken word artists like SykoTek, Obby and Reaper Vlad. We also have poets like Princess, Try Bee, Mr Pain and a musician, Langa.

“As an initiative, our goal is to encourage raw creativity and interpretation of any kind of work from performers,” he said.

Moyo said they were looking forward to being a haven for spoken word artists.

“We look forward to growing as an initiative and becoming a creative hub for artists. In the years to come, we will be hosting workshops and training sessions which would be tailor made for the different artists.

“Holy Mic Poetry Jam looks forward to hosting events like the World Poetry Day,” he said.
