adminDr Mombeshora said infrastructural refurbishments, nutritional support, stoves, beds, and sleeping materials have been provided to these 20 facilities in an effort to reduce pregnancy-related deaths and complications. About 10 women die every day in Zimbabwe due to pregnancy-related complications.
Studies show that the majority of these complications occur because expecting mothers delay to get assistance from a trained personnel who assists them to deliver.
Dr Mombeshora said an additional 40 hospitals have received commodities and equipment, but no structural refurbishments were done.
“An analysis of health facility data on the utilisation of maternity waiting homes shows a 200 percent increase in utilisation of maternity homes in 22 hospitals supported with a comprehensive package,” Dr Mombeshora said.
He attributed failure to provide all the targeted 125 mother’s waiting homes with the comprehensive package to financial constrains.
Maternity waiting homes are meant to provide shelter to expecting women living far away from health institutions during their last trimester of pregnancy for them to deliver in a health institution.
