A Friday evening stroll turned fatal for a Cowdray Park woman after she was mowed down by a speeding Honda Fit along Leopold Takawira Avenue in Bulawayo, leaving shocked bystanders reeling in horror.
The tragic incident occurred around 6PM on 27 June near the intersection of L Takawira and Park Road when 34-year-old Faith Chipare was crossing the road. A 19-year-old man from Burnside, behind the wheel of a Honda Fit with no passengers on board, reportedly failed to spot her in time and slammed into her.
The impact was brutal. Chipare sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot.
Bulawayo police have since launched an investigation and confirmed that the driver faces a charge of Culpable Homicide for failing to keep a proper lookout.
Police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said, “Motorists must always keep a proper lookout to ensure they have a clear view of the road ahead and to the sides. Accidents like these are avoidable if drivers exercise caution.”
The tragic crash has sparked debate on road safety, with residents calling for more enforcement and speed control measures, especially in high pedestrian traffic zones.
As Bulawayo mourns yet another life lost on its roads, authorities are reminding drivers: it only takes one second of distraction to turn a car into a weapon.
