A SUSPECTED prostitute — who is pregnant — allegedly hit a reveller with a broken bottle after he allegedly told police she was a prostitute. Memory Mangena, 27, of Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb, allegedly cut up Newman Chimbuna’s forehead with the bottle after a beer binge at a city night club.
Mangena was on Wednesday dragged before Bulawayo magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze facing an assault charge.
She pleaded guilty and was remanded out of custody to yesterday.
Prosecuting, Nkathazo Dlodlo told the court that on Tuesday at around 4AM Chimbuna was having a meal at Golden Grill Takeaway. Mangena allegedly arrived at Golden Grill with a friend who was not named in court.
The court heard that Mangena’s friend pointed at Chimbuna and said he had told police she was a prostitute so that they could arrest her.
“Mangena charged towards Chimbuna and her friend gave her a broken empty bottle. She hit Chimbuna on the forehead leading to him sustaining a deep cut,” said Dlodlo.
He said a passerby alerted police officers who were on patrol and they proceeded to the scene, leading to Mangena’s arrest.
Mangena told the court she was defending herself from a group of men who wanted to assault her, when she accidentally hit Chimbuna.
“Your worship I did not want to injure Chimbuna but I was only defending myself. There were a number of men who wanted to assault me and I had no option but to fight them,” she said. Mangena said she was pregnant and prison was not a good environment for a person in her condition. A heavily bandaged Chimbuna, whose face was swollen, followed proceedings from the gallery and was expected to give his side of the story yesterday.
