Hope cultivates resilience, positive outlook

Flora Teckie-Baha’i Perspective

Hope plays an indispensable role in our lives, for it fosters motivation and a positive outlook.

It nurtures resilience, and strengthens our resolve to persevere through difficulties. Hope inspires us to work for the betterment of our families, our communities, and humanity as a whole.

The Bahá’í Writings encourage us to: “Be calm, be strong, be grateful, and become a lamp full of light, that the darkness of sorrows be annihilated, and that the sun of everlasting joy arises from the dawning-place of heart and soul, shining brightly”.

And further assure us: “Never lose thy trust in God. Be thou ever hopeful, for the bounties of God never cease to flow upon man. If viewed from one perspective they seem to decrease, but from another they are full and complete.

“Man is under all conditions immersed in a sea of God’s blessings. Therefore, be thou not hopeless under any circumstances, but rather be firm in thy hope”.

Hope is not merely passive optimism. It is an active driving force that inspires perseverance and purposeful action. In a world grappling with division, conflict, and wars, hope can motivate us to become builders of a more just, united, and peaceful society.

Our challenges are not simply random occurrences. They can become opportunities for learning, growth, and transformation. A life inspired by hope encourages us to rise above our differences, gives us motivation and drive to pursue our individual advancement and growth, and to contribute to the betterment of society.

Hope should not remain as an aspiration. It should lead us to action. We can express it through serving the common good, striving for social justice, and for the establishment of unity and peace on earth.

Hope empowers us to remain positive during our tests and trials

Life inevitably brings tests and difficulties, yet these experiences can deepen our resilience when hope is anchored in faith. The power of faith creates resilience.

The process of human development requires moral and spiritual choices, often involving challenges, which represent opportunities for spiritual growth. If we pass our tests and trials in life with hope, courage, and fortitude we grow stronger spiritually.

The Bahá’í teachings explain that spiritual growth often emerges through tests and trials, and that difficulties can help draw out our inner strengths.

According to the Bahá’í Writings, “The mind and spirit of man advance when he is tried by suffering. The more the ground is ploughed, the better the seed will grow, the better the harvest will be.

“Just as the plough furrows the earth deeply, purifying it of weeds and thistles, so suffering and tribulation free man from petty affairs of this worldly life until he arrives at a state of complete detachment.

“His attitude in this world will be that of divine happiness. Man is, so to speak, unripe: The heat of the fire of suffering will mature him. Look back to the times of the past, and you will find the greatest men have suffered most”.

Hope, therefore, enables us to remain positive, courageous, and steadfast even during life’s most difficult moments.

Hope can result from faith and observing spiritual principles

Following the laws and teachings of God, such as trustworthiness, love and unity, caring for one another, a contentment that leads to a positive attitude in life, help greatly in overcoming our physical and emotional anxieties.

Hope reaches its fullest expression when it is translated into action. Hope inspires service to humanity, concern for the common good, and efforts to strengthen unity among people.

The Bahá’í Writings emphasise the importance of serving humanity, noting that “the honour and distinction of the individual” consist in being “a source of social good,” and that peace, justice and security will only be firmly established in the world when all people “become united and coordinated in service to the world of humanity”.

Serving humanity gives meaning, purpose, and stimulus to life.  Serving humanity and bringing joy to others also enrich ourselves spiritually and bring us joy.

Recognising the oneness of humanity and striving to build unity within our families, neighbourhoods, and communities are powerful sources of lasting hope and joy.

The Bahá’í Writings state, “That one indeed is a man who, today, dedicateth himself to the service of the entire human race . . . Blessed and happy is he that ariseth to promote the best interests of the peoples and kindreds of the earth” and that “Until all nations and peoples become united . . . Until national and international prejudices are effaced in the reality of this spiritual brotherhood, true progress, prosperity and lasting happiness will not be attained by man”.

Hope cultivates resilience and a positive outlook. It fosters motivation not only to believe that a better world is possible, but also to become active participants in bringing that world into being — through faith, service, and love for the whole human family.
