A 23 year old man who was carrying out ushering duties during a high level conference at Victoria Falls in Matabeleland North province was caught on CCTV stealing a black Canon Eos 7 D mark 11 camera belonging to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development.

Panashe Tirivanhu (23) of Hatcliff extension in Harare, employed by an ushering company committed the offence on Tuesday.

He appeared before Victoria Falls Magistrate Ms Linda Dzvene on Thursday who remanded him to Friday for sentencing.

This was after he had pleaded guilty to theft charges.

Prosecutor Mrs Portia Moyo told the court that on May 27, at Elephant Hills Hotel, Victoria Falls, Tirivanhu unlawfully took a black Canon Eos 7 D mark 11 camera belonging to the Ministry of Transport.

“The complainant in this case is the Ministry of Transport being represented by Rejoice Makoni (35) employed at the Ministry of Transport as a communications manager. The complainant and the accused are not related.

“On the 27 May 2025 at around 2pm and at Elephant Hills Hotel, Victoria falls, Makoni left his valuables including a company canon EOS 7D mark 11 camera black in colour serial number 043021010329 on his desk in the conference room going for lunch. Panashe went to Makoni’s desk and stole the camera. He then took the camera to his booked lodge where he hid it in the wardrobe,” said Mrs Moyo.

She said Makoni discovered that the camera had been stolen and filed a report to the Police.
“Investigations unveiled that the accused was the one who committed the offence through a Closed-Circuit Television which had captured him. The police arrested the accused and recovered the stolen property. The total value stolen is worth US$ 1700-00 and all was recovered.
