Caribbea Bay Hotel in Kariba has donated reusable sanitary wear to over 60 girls from disadvantaged families who were failing to attend school during their menstrual cycle.
The girls were now resorting to using unhygienic and health threatening aids like toilet tissues and pieces of cloth, which were affecting their esteem.
Speaking at the handover of the sanitary wear, the hotel’s general manager Mrs Amanda Matema said most girls were skipping school as they could not afford to buy commercial sanitary pads.
Disposable pads cost about one dollar a packet in retail shops.
“We trust the small gift will go a long way, not just in assisting these young ladies with relief once every month, but enabling them to attend school every day of the month, comfortably,” she said.
The reusable pads were sewn by Tony White Executive, a non-governmental organisation which operates a women empowerment project funded through the Netherlands Embassy in Kariba Urban.
