A 24-YEAR-OLD man from Zvishavane has been arrested after terrorising residents in Chiredzi and Zvishavane in a year-long housebreaking spree that saw him loot groceries, a cellphone, and even a motorbike from people’s homes.
Jabulani Gumbo was finally cornered by detectives on 7 July at Kofi Village in Zvishavane, thanks to a tip-off from alert members of the public. Police say the suspect is linked to at least seven cases of unlawful entry and theft, including one where he stole a motorbike from a bedroom in Chiredzi.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest and praised the public for its role.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Jabulani Gumbo (24) in connection with a spate of unlawful entry into premises and theft cases which occurred between July 2024 and 02nd July 2025 in Chiredzi and Zvishavane,” he said.
Gumbo’s downfall began on 6 July when detectives from CID Zvishavane received a tip that he was in possession of a stolen cellphone linked to a break-in at Mudereki Village on 2 July. Officers tracked him down the next day and recovered the stolen device.
Investigations revealed Gumbo was the man behind a 26 May break-in at a shop in Mudereri Village where he helped himself to groceries, and a 1 May raid at Section 10, Hippo Valley Estate in Chiredzi where a motorbike parked in a bedroom was stolen. The motorbike has since been recovered in Madzivadondo, Zvishavane.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police applauds the public for providing information which led to the arrest of the suspect,” said Commissioner Nyathi. “The public should continue supplying information on criminal activities throughout the country.”
Police have urged anyone with further information to call the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.
