Housing co-op wrangle turns nasty

A fight over control of Ngungunyana Housing Cooperative turned nasty after a group allegedly petrol-bombed a house belonging to a rival co-operative member.

House number 14085 in Budiriro 5, belonging to zanu-pf party official Cde Isaac Chimombe was bombed on Saturday night by a rival group.

Cde Chimombe is accusing a rival group led by Mr Luke Chisango for the alleged bombing of his house.

“I’m suspecting Chisango and his group for bombing my house,” he said. “Last Thursday they came and smashed a window of my car. I got a report that they were hunting for me and I had to flee.”

He accused an interim committee led by Mr Chisango as bogus after it unconstitutionally took over control from Cde Thiko Sibanda as.

When The Herald crew visited the house yesterday, it was informed that the interim committee had taken all building materials from the cooperative’s offices to Mr Chisango’s house.

Cde Sibanda, a war veteran who claimed to be in charge of the cooperative, said they had called in the police to help investigate the matter.

“This bogus interim committee started operating in September 2013. They are fighting us and have dragged us to the High Court,” he said.

“They failed in their bid to be recognised. We are the committee that is in charge.”

Police investigating the matter refused to comment, while Mr Chisango could not be reached for comment.

However, members aligned to Mr Chisango said some co-operative members formed an interim committee after Cde Sibanda’s team was accused of abusing funds.
