Hove’s dedication to golf extends to Victoria Falls

VICTORIA Falls, renowned for its majestic waterfalls, has become synonymous with another kind of flow — the smooth swing of a golf club. Conferences in this iconic destination often see executives trading boardroom banter for the camaraderie of the green, unwinding at the esteemed Elephant Hills Golf Course. Behind these seemingly leisurely rounds lies a strategic approach by Munyaradzi Hove, who leverages the sport to foster valuable connections within the business world.

Hove’s passion for sports runs deep. A former football player who graced the fields of Gweru, he even flirted with professional aspirations, playing alongside future football stars like Tapiwa Khumbuyani and Mackreza Navaya. Though his path diverged from the soccer pitch, his love for competition and the thrill of the game remained.

Unlike many sports that demand peak performance in youth, golf offers a unique longevity. Hove’s own golfing journey began unexpectedly at the age of 32 during a business trip to Cape Town. A chance encounter with a young boy who invited him for a quick round on the green sparked an unexpected passion. That single hole proved to be a turning point, igniting a lifelong love for the sport.

“I was in Cape Town and tired. My hosts took me to their family house, and their son came to my room and asked me to play with him on a family one-hole. He taught me how to hold the club, and that’s when my hunger for the sport started,” said Hove.
Shortly after his introduction to the sport, Hove found himself in Port Elizabeth, a golfing greenhorn eager to test his nascent skills. Despite only two days of practice under his belt, he bravely entered a local tournament. To his astonishment, he not only enjoyed the exhilarating competition but also emerged victorious, claiming his first prize. This unexpected triumph ignited a fierce passion within him, a hunger for the game he couldn’t ignore.

Inspired by the legendary Tiger Woods, Hove embarked on a journey of dedicated self-improvement. He immersed himself in the world of golf, devouring books and meticulously honing his skills. His competitive spirit led him to tournaments across South Africa, the USA, and Zimbabwe, where he consistently showcased his talent, accumulating a collection of impressive trophies. Today, he boasts an impressive handicap of 3, a testament to his dedication and skill.

Hove’s impact extends beyond his personal achievements. As the former captain of the esteemed Elephant Hills Golf Club (2019-2021), he has played a pivotal role in shaping the golfing landscape in the region. In 2015, he took the bold step of relocating the pro-shop from the main hotel, previously operated by the renowned (and now dearly missed) golf guru Roger Baylis.

Starting with a modest selection, Hove has transformed the pro-shop into a thriving hub for golfers, now boasting over 40 sets of clubs, 90 percent of which are rented to traveling players seeking to experience the beauty of the Elephant Hills course. The pro-shop, open daily, offers a wide range of golfing essentials, from apparel and footwear to essential accessories, catering to the needs of both seasoned players and enthusiastic newcomers.

“I was looking for a prime spot near golfers,” said Hove.
Hove’s dedication to golf extends far beyond his own impressive achievements. He has become a revered mentor and trainer, generously sharing his expertise with aspiring golfers of all ages, from eager juniors to seasoned amateurs. A certified trainer with the Zimbabwe Golf Association, Hove has guided countless individuals on their golfing journeys, including numerous tourism executives who have benefited from his insightful instruction.

The impact of Hove’s mentorship is evident in the success of his junior trainees. Many have blossomed into exceptional amateur golfers, and he takes immense pride in witnessing some of his former students now sharing their own knowledge as coaches, perpetuating the cycle of learning and growth.

Hove’s influence in Victoria Falls’ golfing community is undeniable. He is the go-to figure for aspiring golfers, sought after for his expertise and guidance. His resume boasts an impressive list of golfing partners, including five Heads of State who have enjoyed rounds with him on the picturesque courses of Victoria Falls.

Reflecting on his commitment to nurturing young talent, Hove invests his resources generously. He provides aspiring junior golfers with free access to equipment from his pro-shop, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their development during training sessions.

His goal is simple — to demystify the sport. “The stereotype is that golf is a sport for the rich. That is why some of us started very late, and we know what is needed to empower youngsters,” Hove said.
While in Cape Town, Hove’s athleticism found an outlet on the cricket field, further showcasing his versatility as a sportsman.

His remarkable journey, from the vibrant energy of the soccer field to the serene elegance of the golf course, stands as a powerful testimony to the transformative power of sport. It’s not just about individual achievement; it’s about building community, fostering camaraderie, and inspiring others to reach for their dreams.

Today, Hove remains deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of golfers. He imparts the game’s fundamental skills, guiding young minds and encouraging them to embrace the endless possibilities that golf offers. For Hove, golf is far more than a mere pastime. It’s a lifelong adventure, a source of joy and fulfilment that he is passionate about sharing with the world.
