THE deejaying landscape has transformed rapidly in recent years, driven by advancing technology and changing audience tastes, forcing artistes to innovate to stay relevant constantly.
While some have struggled to keep pace, others have thrived by blending genres and experimenting with new sounds. Among those making waves is Irvine Zvikomborero Maponga, popularly known as DJ Irvinex, whose creative approach and live remixing skills are fast making him a household name.
The wheel spinner shot to prominence after winning the Carling Black Label DJ Clash in 2023, a breakthrough that opened doors to bigger stages, including performances at several high-profile events.
Speaking to the Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, DJ Irvinex said his style involves remixing tracks live to create unique, high-energy sets.
“Growing up in Mutare at Chikanga Suburb before moving to Harare at Kuwadzana, I’ve always been accustomed to many lifestyles and these influence my work. I’m on a journey to make music that moves people, and I am still learning FL Studio. I’m all about creating vibes that heal,” said DJ Irvinex.
He said winning the DJ Clash marked a turning point in his career. Interestingly, the equipment he used at the clash was borrowed from a friend.
“Before the clash, I used to borrow a laptop, but after winning the clash, I was introduced to the gadgets that I dreamt about, like a controller and a powerful MacBook. The big lesson is to learn not to be selfish and to share because I won this with a laptop that I borrowed.”
In appreciation of the support he received, the DJ plans to give back by launching a podcast this year to support local artistes.—@mthabisi_mthire
