I was reading a recent copy of The Herald and saw a fascinating story about Mr Pardon Gurajena who modified his bicycle into a solar powered semi vehicle.
Zimbabwe is home to some brilliant minds, but due to our society’s attitude, some of the talents that others exhibit have been dismissed useless.
Growing up, the only way out which was stipulated by society for us was via education.
In the process we forgot about the other people who have other gifts besides academia.
We have found ourselves forcing some individuals to suppress what they can do in terms of natural talent.
In recent years we have seen some talents in the world of football, with footballers like Tinotenda Kadewere and Marvelous Nakamba worth mentioning.
Out there is a kid who is an exceptional footballer who needs support and growth from the community, but there is little to support the dreams of these youths.
They eventually give up on their dreams and end up being in jobs they are not comfortable.
What is needed in our communities is to promote new talent.
We should put more emphasis in talent identification and development of such talents and from the discovered talents there is also a possibility of inclining the trajectory of some peoples careers.
In schools, they should learn subjects that might benefit to further their dreams.
If a student is gifted in terms of being artistic, focus on subjects such as art, music, dance and drama should be encouraged.
The reality with our education systems, especially in developing countries, is that they are not tailor made for students with special talents.
The programmes have the assumption that all the learners are basically the same.
In promoting these talents, we might boost our country’s image on the globe.
We need to get rid of the negative energies we exhibit towards the gifted members of the society.
To the gifted talents in Zimbabwe, do not give up on your dreams, keep on doing what you do best to nature that special talent that you have.
You never know who is watching, and who might be interested in the talent that you exhibit.
Although the world we live in requires academic excellence in some fields, do what you enjoy the most to nurture that dream and grow to the highest levels.
Uplifting the community means that we treat each other with respect, understanding and care.
It means that we listen and work together to create better lives for everyone in our community.
We must care for our community and for each other.
When we do our part to better our neighborhoods, we elevate and open ourselves up to the possibilities and potential of a greater success of the whole community.
