STRONG enough to make holes in the rock are tiny drops of water that persist to fall. Persistence is the attitude that breaks down mountains, one rock at a time.
These words echo Nomathamsanqa “Nkwali” Mkhwananzi, who has proved beyond every shadow of doubt that she holds the future of Zimbabwean music.
Her musical obsession began at a very tender age from Emakhandeni Primary, the music enthusiasm continued even at high school at Sobukhazi where she got more drilling in shaping her career and she used to sing at church a lot.
In an interview with Sunday Life, she said she used to be a backing vocalist of poet and singer Albert Nyathi and that was her breakthrough to the international stage.
“In the year I toured UK with Albert Nyathi as a backing vocalist was really when I got introduced to the international stage,” she said.
She said Mother Africa Show was her green light when she pursued her musical career as a solo artiste.
“In 2004 I auditioned for the show Mother Africa (MA), then in 2006 I started working with them and I was the lead singer in that show up until Nkwali was born and that was in 2015,” she said.
Her works have not gone unrecognised as she has managed to win a Zima award for the best accapella album.
“In 2015 I recorded my first imbube album titled Sithokozile and with this album I hold a Zima award for the best acapella album in 2016. In this album I worked with Indonsakusa formerly known as Impumelelo Shining Stars.
“I am working on my new album, something different from what I did that will be out early next year. I can also say that I doother genres as I have released two Afro-soul singles titled Kwanele and Uyangiconfuza and I have also gone on to release two house tracks and the other one called Rafiki, on it I worked with Dj Zwesta a Zimbabwean based in South Africa,” said Nkwali.
She also revealed that for her home fans, hunger will be over as she will light up the local stage in December.
“I will be performing at home in December at a date that I will announce soon once I am done with all the logistics,” she said.
