How to avoid winter weight gain

Siba Guzha
HELLO gentle readers, I hope I find you well. We are in that time of the year where it is difficult for most of us to get out of bed. Some say it is the most difficult time to exercise, I don’t think so??? Winter months may actually help you burn more calories.

First, the good news: The winter months don’t have to be your downfall when it comes to losing weight. In fact, if you live in cold-weather climates, your body may naturally use 10 percent more calories. How? Walking around with extra layers of clothing, including a coat and possibly boots, is a very mild form of weight training that can ignite your calorie burn. Still, losing weight in the winter is no picnic, especially when comfort foods such as meatloaf and creamy mashed potatoes may take on a new allure. Although it is hard to resist the urge to cocoon in sweaters and sweat pants all winter long, here is what you can do to stay on the weight-loss track this season:

If you cannot resist bulky sweaters or winter’s other ample attire, opt for buttoned waistbands instead of elastic. There is nothing like a tight button to keep your weight where it needs to be.

Don’t let snow keep you hovering by the fire. Try cross-country skiing, icing skating or snowing shoeing. For us who are in the other part of the world, for an example, you can go for a morning jog in the Vumba area. Try something different for once. Varying your workout with wintertime activities is a great way to beat exercise boredom. If you like to walk in your neighbourhood, reverse your route some days, or take to the trails at your local state park.

Seek support to motivate yourself. In the gym try to go for the group training classes that keeps you going. From my experience I have noticed that most people achieve more in the group classes rather than training as individuals.

Whether you’ve got an exercise buddy or a weight-loss group, try to get out and get the support you need, despite the chilly weather. Studies show that social support is critical for maintaining healthy lifestyle changes. You need people to tell you, “You can do it”, and to reinforce the importance of what you’re trying to do.

Pair some motivation with a positive attitude and you’ll make it through this winter just fine!
