How to read and use teacher comments to improve your performance

WHEN students receive their marked assignments, tests or examination scripts, most immediately look at the score or grade. While marks are important, the comments written by teachers are often even more valuable.

These comments provide guidance on what you are doing well and what you need to improve. Learning how to read and use teacher comments effectively can help you achieve better results and become a more successful learner.

The first step is to read all the comments carefully. Avoid focusing only on the mark. Teachers write comments to help learners understand their strengths and weaknesses. A comment such as “expand your explanation,” “improve your presentation,” or “provide more evidence” contains important advice that can help you perform better in future tasks.

Secondly, take time to understand the feedback. If a comment is not clear, ask your teacher to explain it. Good learners are not afraid to seek clarification. Understanding your mistakes is the first step towards correcting them.

Students should also look for recurring comments. If different teachers repeatedly mention issues such as poor spelling, incomplete answers, lack of detail or poor time management, these are areas that need special attention. Identifying patterns in feedback helps you focus on the skills that require the most improvement.

Once you understand the comments, create an action plan. If your teacher says your answers need more detail, make a conscious effort to include explanations and examples in future work.

If handwriting is a concern, practise writing neatly and legibly. If your teacher notes that you are rushing through questions, work on managing your time more effectively.

It is important to remember that feedback is not criticism. Teacher comments are meant to help you grow and improve. Instead of feeling discouraged by mistakes, view them as opportunities to learn. Every successful student learns from feedback and uses it to become better.

Keeping a feedback notebook can also be helpful. Record common comments from your teachers and review them regularly. Before writing a test or submitting an assignment, remind yourself of the areas you are working to improve.

Parents can support this process by discussing teacher comments with their children. Rather than concentrating only on grades, they should encourage learners to understand the feedback and take practical steps to improve.

Students who consistently apply teacher feedback often make significant academic progress. They develop stronger study habits, improve their confidence and achieve better results over time. Remember, teacher comments are not just words written on your paper, they are valuable tools for learning and improvement.

The next time you receive your marked work, do not stop at looking at the grade. Read the comments carefully, reflect on them and put them into practice. Doing so may be the key to unlocking your full academic potential.
