Speaking at the hand-over ceremony in the capital, Capitol Insurance chief executive, Phillip Mtasa, said they were happy to be associated with City and look forward to a lengthy and fulfilling relationship.
“Quite clearly this deal is a start and we are taking baby steps but it will expand in future, depending on its success in this first part,” Mtasa said
“The club will also be required to play its part so that we can continue pushing for more resources to make more investments.
“Sponsorship is no longer a donation but a business transaction and with Harare City it is all emanating from our relations with the council from way back.
“We are donating in this small way but I know it will go a long way in helping the team achieve their goals in the league. I believe this will do well for the team and the supporters as well.
“Both parties must benefit and that is why the two clubs will need to manage this sponsorship well and see that it stretches to all other branches of their teams like the juniors, which need to be properly structured.
“Obviously, once this initiative succeeds we will look at other avenues as we are involved in several other social responsibilities.”
Mtasa also challenged the corporate world to come on board and help teams as a way of giving back to the community.
“I believe the corporate world is willing to help and if people and teams approach them they can help,” said Mtasa.
“Soccer provides for recreation so everyone wants to get involved and give the teams the support they desire.
“Helping the teams is healthy as it brings about competition within our local league.”
City legal secretary, Wisdom Gandanzara, believes the donation will go a long way in helping his team.
“Yes, we will be smartly dressed (this season) and we are looking forward to playing in the new kit,” said Gandanzara.
“Like every child receiving new clothes at Christmas we are excited about having (the new) black-and-white striped jerseys and would want to cherish our ‘parent’ who can take care of us in such a big way.
“We will try our best to make the two Insurance Brokers happy by winning our games. We are hopeful that the relationship will continue to grow and we will continue to fly your flags high.”
City have made a flying start and are currently third on the log standings with 21 points in the bag from 11 games.
Highlanders top the table with 26 but City, who have a game in hand, could slash the gap if the Premier Soccer League Disciplinary Committee rule in their favour in their abandoned match against Shabanie Mine.
The match was stopped after violence erupted at Maglas when City where leading 3-1 with 81 minutes having been played.
