A 45-YEAR-OLD Gwanda man allegedly strangled his terminally ill wife as he did not want to continue nursing her, police said yesterday. The incident occurred on Tuesday at about 8pm in Guyu area in Gwanda District. Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said Habathusi Ncube of Mawabeni 2 Village under Chief Nhlamba allegedly strangled his wife, Sinikiwe Nkala (35) because he was tired of nursing her.
“On 6 August at about 8pm, Habathusi arrived home from Zendere Farm where he rents a grocery shop after having been summoned home by his in-laws through his uncle Mpendulo Ncube (71) to attend to his terminally ill wife.
“On arrival at home, he found his in-laws having left for their homestead. The suspect who appeared visibly drunk, sent his son to ask Ms Silibaziso Nxumalo (50), his brother’s wife to come to his homestead,” said Insp Ndebele.
When Ms Nxumalo arrived at Habathusi’s homestead, he demanded to know the purpose of his in-laws’ visit.
Insp Ndebele said Habathusi’s actions scared all the people who were at his homestead.
“After learning that his in-laws wanted him to take care of his ill wife, Habathusi became argumentative and violent, threatening to kill his wife and thereafter hang himself. Ms Nxumalo tried in vain to calm him down. Ms Nxumalo and the rest of the people later fled from the homestead when Habathusi threatened to attack them,” he said.
Insp Ndebele said after Habathusi was left with his wife, he used a rope to strangle her.
A report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
