AN officer at the Gwanda Registry Offices, Mr Abel Sibindi, is battling for life at the United Bulawayo Hospitals after he was attacked by two men who wanted to rob him. The incident happened on Saturday. Tererai Matave (18) of Village 17, Chindawi in Masvingo and Joseph Joma (27) of Chikwinya Village, also in Masvingo yesterday appeared before Gwanda magistrate Mr Arafat Kozanai facing a charge of attempted murder. They were not asked to plead and were remanded in custody to 20 August. They were advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
The State alleges that on 3 August at about 8.30am at Dambashoko Village, Matave and Joma waylaid Mr Sibindi with the intention to rob him while he was coming from his shop.
They allegedly axed him on the forehead and left knee. Matave and Joma allegedly fled from the scene but were later apprehended by villagers who had tracked them down.
They were handed over to the police.
Meanwhile, a Gwanda man, Innocent Phiri (22) of House Number B59 Zimcan Compound in West Nicholson appeared before Mr Kozanai facing a murder charge.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 21 August.
He was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
The State alleges that on 27 July at Zimcan Compound, Phiri allegedly struck Ruka Zivananga once on the head with an empty bottle.
Zivananga fell down and sustained serious injuries which he nursed at home until 2 August when he died.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Phiri’s arrest.
