A BULAWAYO woman got the shock of her life on Wednesday when she discovered the real name of her husband of eight years.
Patience Ndou appeared before a Bulawayo magistrate demanding maintenance from her husband Jeremiah Govanayi whom she knew as Tawanda Mugwi.
Ndou trembled when Govanayi told magistrate Victor Mpofu to address him as Jeremiah Govanayi and not as Tawanda Mugwi.
“I am sorry to say this but my name is Jeremiah Govanayi, that is my real name and I bear it on my national identity card,” he said to the amused magistrate.
Mpofu quizzed Govanayi on why he was using a fake name.
“My friend you are not serious, you mean that for the past eight years, you have been having sex with this woman knowing that she does not know your real name,” he said, drawing laughter from the gallery.
Govanayi failed to defend his actions and kept quiet in shame.
The seemingly embarrassed Ndou said she was in shock and could not believe that her husband deceived her.
“He told me that Tawanda is his name when I got married to him. That has been his name for as long as I can recall. I do not know him anymore,” she said in shock.
She was demanding $163 as maintenance for their child.
“He is failing provide for us therefore I want the court to help so that he can take care of his child.”
Mpofu ordered Govanayi to pay $80 for his minor child starting end of this month.
