HUNDREDS of people braved the chilly morning weather and gathered at White City Stadium in Bulawayo to celebrate Zimbabwe’s Defence Forces Day (ZDF).
This year’s commemorations are being held under the theme: “ZDF Guaranteeing Peace and Stability for the Attainment of Vision 2030.”
The annual event honours the country’s Defence Forces and recognises their role in maintaining a stable environment for national development.
President Mnangagwa, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the ZDF, is expected to preside over the main ZDF Day celebrations at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution are officiating at celebrations being held in the country’s provinces.
Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Judith Ncube is expected to inspect the guard of honour before delivering the President’s speech on his behalf.
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day also provides an opportunity for members of the public to show their appreciation for the sacrifices and contributions of the men and women serving in the country’s defence forces.
The Defence Forces are also recognised for their role in defending the national flag and supporting communities through various assignments, including disaster mitigation and response.
The celebrations are expected to feature military parades, cultural performances and other activities showcasing the capabilities and readiness of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
The commemorations are also aimed at fostering national unity and pride while highlighting the military’s role in supporting Zimbabwe’s long-term development goals under Vision 2030.
