FC HUNTERS say avoiding relegation remains their main concern despite the riches and CAF Confederation Cup place attached to winning the ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup.
Only five points separate Hunters from the relegation zone with eight league matches remaining. The Cup winners will pocket US$500 000, qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup and receive a further US$500 000 towards their continental campaign. Hunters chief executive Terrence Malunga, however, says preserving the club’s Premiership status comes first.
“But I think the most important thing is to avoid relegation. And that’s where probably the focus is much, much, much more,” said Malunga.
Hunters host Hwange in the Round of 16 during the weekend of August 28 to 30. They booked their place with a 3-1 victory over Norton Big Boys, while Hwange eliminated Dynamos.
“It was quite a good draw, but Hwange are a perennial competitor in Zimbabwean football,” said Malunga.
“So, in terms of experience, they are better than ourselves.
“But we are also riding on the momentum that the boys do have. I think our boys have acquitted themselves well.” Hunters strengthened their squad during the mid-season transfer window, bringing in experienced campaigners Godknows Murwira, Terrence Dzvukamanja and Gareth Madhake.
Wingers Mafios Chihweta and Tadiwa Chakuchichi also arrived from Scottland, giving coach Nesbert Saruchera more options as the club fights on two fronts.
“Obviously, it’s going to be a balancing act,” said Malunga.
“And I think it’s also where the squad depth comes in.
“I think we have decent squad depth after we had brilliant acquisitions in the mid-season.”
Hunters believe their Cup progress can also lift the squad for the remaining league matches.
“The team is improving week in, week out,” said Malunga.
“And we’re hoping getting into the last 16 also motivates the players.”
