A 43-year-old Hurungwe woman has been jailed for concealing the birth of twins after burying the infants in a shallow grave in a nearby bush.

Angela Madzvimbo appeared at the Karoi Magistrates Court recently, where she was convicted of concealing the birth of the twins.

She was initially sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, before three months were suspended on condition of good behaviour, and the remaining three months were also suspended on condition that she performs 105 hours of community service.

Prosecutors told the court that on January 2, 2026, Madzvimbo left her homestead in the morning while heavily pregnant, claiming she was going to look for mushrooms in a nearby bush.

She returned later without the pregnancy and the village head and other community members questioned her.

Madzvimbo admitted that she had delivered stillborn twins and buried their bodies near her homestead without informing health officials or the police.

The matter was reported to authorities, leading to the exhumation of the bodies, which were taken to hospital for post-mortem.

Following the ruling, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) reminded the public that all births and deaths, including stillbirths, must be formally reported, warning that failure to do so is a criminal offence.
