A Bulawayo woman who scalded her husband with hot cooking oil for choosing to sleep on the floor following a misunderstanding between the couple has been sentenced to 315 hours of community service after the complainant told the court that he had forgiven her and preferred that she be fined instead of imprisoned.
Edina Nyenda (32), of Luveve suburb, was convicted of physical abuse by Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube.
She was initially sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment, with six months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining nine months were suspended on condition that she completes 315 hours of community service at Imbizo Primary School.
Testifying in court, the complainant, Charles Ncube (31), told the court that he had forgiven his wife and wished for her to be sentenced to pay a fine.
Prosecuting, Ms Cathrine Kuzu told the court that Nyenda is the complainant’s wife.
The court heard that on 9 May 2026, at about 2am, Ncube was sleeping on the bed before moving to the floor following a misunderstanding with his wife.
This did not go down well with Nyenda, who boiled cooking oil and poured it on Ncube’s face and left arm.
Ncube sustained burns to his face and left arm and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
A police report was made, leading to Nyenda’s arrest, the court heard.
