Award-winning alternative musician Japhet “Hwabaraty” Mlauzi is set to launch his latest album where it all began, in Njube suburb, at Sdudla Beer Garden, on September 20. The album is titled Amandla, a name that symbolises his prowess and power in the music scene.
The 10-track project features collaborations with South African contemporary artiste Mqobi Yazo, Udonsi LwabaPostoli, Sisa Senkosi, Rosalie and Fish F Ndaramu.
Of all the collaborations, the one with Mqobi Yazo stands out, as their song Amandla became the title track for the entire album. Hwabaraty and Mqobi have forged a brotherhood, bonded by their respect for African culture, heritage and the healing power of music that connects one with their spiritual being.
The Njube-bred musician said he has long drawn inspiration from Mqobi, and it was an honour to finally work with him on this project. He recalled how, in 2021, he was spiritually led to enter the regional music space. This prompted a trip to South Africa, where he met Mqobi Yazo, and together they hit the studio.
Their collaboration has grown into a relationship that goes beyond music, as the two now share brotherly ties, offering each other family and business advice.
“Amandla is the title track of the album and a true milestone in my journey. For years, Mqobi has been a source of inspiration to me. His music and story pushed me forward even before we ever crossed paths. When I visited South Africa in 2021, I joined him in the studio and together we brought Amandla to life.
“The song is not only about strength and resilience, but also about dreams fulfilled, proof that patience and persistence open doors,” said Hwabaraty.

He added that the collaboration reflects the essence of the Amandla album; building bridges through music, celebrating culture and connecting communities across borders.
Meanwhile, preparations for the launch are well underway. Hwabaraty has unveiled a star-studded line-up that will perform for free, as he gives back to the Njube community that raised him.
Acts set to perform include Umkhathi Theatre Works, Iyasa, Mzistozz Mfanafuthi, Bolamba Cultural Birds, Madlela Sikhobokhobo, Fish F Ndaramu, Sisasenkosi and Udonsi LwabaPostoli.
“Njube is my home and foundation. Launching here is a way of giving back to the community that raised me, celebrating my roots and inspiring young people that greatness can be born from the township and reach the world stage,” said Hwabaraty.
He revealed that the project explores themes of resilience, cultural pride, love, unity and identity, encouraging listeners to remain grounded while navigating life’s challenges.
The album also reflects his journey from Njube to international stages, guided by ancestral wisdom and enriched by global collaborations.
“This album is a true reflection of my cultural lifestyle. It blends traditional Southern African rhythms with modern sounds, symbolising both struggle and triumph, spirituality and celebration,” he said.
Hwabaraty’s most recent album, Njalo, was released last year.
