Castle Lager Premiership tie at the Colliery.
It meant that Hwange have now completed back-to-back wins over the Green Machine and, in the process, they handed returning Makepekepe gaffer Loyd Chitembwe his first defeat in only his second game in charge.
Chitembwe started his second stint as CAPS United coach with a smile after a 2-0 victory over Kiglon, a team now coached by his predecessor Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe.
His hopes of a second win on the trot all but fizzled out when impressive Hwange midfielder Rodwell Chinyengetere did all the donkey work on the left flank before sending in a defence splitting cross which the CAPS defence failed to deal with.
It resulted in a loose ball falling into the path of Zulu who opened fire from the edge of the box and found his target.
It was such a ferocious effort that goalkeeper Edmore “Zikeeper” Sibanda was left stunned and did not move an inch when the shot hit the back of the nets.
Tennant Chilumba’s charges deserve a medal for inconsistency in this year’s race if their performance in the past four games in anything to go by.
First they went to Mandava last month and were outclassed 2-0 by Premiership moneybags FC Platinum.
With the fans expecting another downfall when defending champions Motor Action came to the Colliery a fortnight ago, Hwange turned on the style to beat the Bulls 3-2.
They went to Chicken Inn last weekend with their tails up and they put up a horrible show to lose 2-0.
The miners then put on a disciplined show yesterday to ensure CAPS United endured the long trip back to the capital empty handed.
But it was CAPS who settled first with some lovely touches with their chance to break the deadlock coming in the 4th minute but their big goalkeeper, and dead ball specialist, Edmore Sibanda directed his close range free kick into the Hwange wall.
In the 11th minute Chinyengetere forced Sibanda into action when he unleashed a volley which was acrobatically tipped over the bar by the goalie as the coalminers made their first knock on the visitors’ door.
The game was balanced and in the 20th minute Zulu almost tore the nets with a fierce shot that found the target and, ultimately, made all the difference.
Makepekepe almost hit back immediately when midfielder Pride Tafirenyika combined well with Malvern Samaneka in the middle of the park before the latter released ageless striker Leonard Tsipa whose cheeky scissors kick could not beat goalkeeper Petros Mhari.
Mhari was standing in for the injured Timothy Sibanda.
Tsipa was to be later ferried to the Hwange Hospital with a head injury after a nasty aerial collision with a Chipangano player.
On the half hour mark Zulu almost turned provider when he beat David Sengu, at the edge of the box, and laid the ball for gangling striker Fransceco Zekumbawere who directed a weak shot at goal.
Then Hwange’s outstanding player, Nkosana Siwela, thought he had beaten the half-time whistle with Chipangano’s second goal but he watched his sizzling grounder graze some paint off the left upright with Sibanda beaten.
Samaneka and Tafirenyika continued to initiate most of CAPS United’s raids in the last half but Chipangano’s twin centre backs, Obert Moyo and Gerald Ndlovu, combined to defend for dear life. Even another Edmore Sibanda ferocious free kick, late in the match, could not rescue the visitors as he again rammed his shot into the congested wall to seal Makepekepe’s fate.
Chilumba was relieved at the end of the game.
“I am happy for the precious points though we are working on improving our communication and I am hope we will get another set of points because we want to stay in contention for the league prize,” he said.
Chitembwe accepted defeat and said he was pleased with his boys’ performance.
“We lost and that happens in football but I am happy with the performance of the team and I am seeing better days ahead.” said the coach.
