From Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Hwange
THERE has been a controversial call to ban women from participating in the annual Hwange Golf Championships. Those advocating for the move argue that the Hwange Open is now a national event. They say ladies have their own national tournaments under the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union which men are not allowed to partake in.
“The Hwange Open used to be a social event that is why we had ladies but now it’s a national event. I therefore seriously feel we should not be having ladies here,” said Midlands golfer Busywek Dube.
He said having ladies at the Hwange Open was giving an unfair sporting advantage to them.
Hwange golf club captain Vumi Moyo said his committee would consider calls to stop women from participating.
“It has to be brought to the right forum but I think those making those calls have a point.
“It’s really not for me to categorically state with certainty that we will ban ladies, we shall see though,” said Moyo.
The calls though will certainly spark fierce resistance from keen lady golfers who have been participating in the event over the years.
