THE Hwange Local Board has stepped up efforts to enhance road safety through an ongoing road marking and signage visibility programme being rolled out across the town’s 60-kilometre road network.

The initiative forms part of the local authority’s routine road maintenance programme aimed at improving safety and efficiency for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Hwange Local Board Town Secretary Mr Ndumiso Mdlalose said the programme is designed to improve visibility and ensure that road users can easily identify traffic signs, lane markings, pedestrian crossings and other essential road safety features.

“As a local authority, we are committed to maintaining our road infrastructure to acceptable standards. Clear road markings and visible traffic signs are essential in promoting road safety, reducing accidents and improving the overall flow of traffic within our jurisdiction,” he said.

Mr Mdlalose said the council manages approximately 60 kilometres of road network and continues to prioritise routine maintenance to keep roads safe and accessible.

“These road marking and signage enhancement works are part of our broader maintenance programme. We want all road users, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, to navigate our roads safely and confidently. Well-maintained roads also contribute to public safety and the overall attractiveness of our town,” he said.

He said the local authority remains committed to infrastructure maintenance and upgrades despite prevailing economic challenges.

“Council will continue prioritising key infrastructure as part of its commitment to quality service delivery and the well-being of residents. Improving road safety is not only about infrastructure, but also about protecting lives and supporting economic activity within the town,” said Mr Mdlalose.

He said the road safety programme forms part of a wider infrastructure development drive aimed at improving service delivery and the quality of life for residents.

“Council is implementing several development projects expected to be completed before year-end, including road rehabilitation, water and sewer upgrades, improvements to public amenities and other initiatives designed to support economic growth and improve living standards in Hwange,” he said.

Mr Mdlalose said the local authority remains focused on projects that respond to community needs while creating an enabling environment for investment and tourism.

“As a growing town, it is important that we continue investing in infrastructure that supports both current and future development. The road marking exercise is part of a broader programme to make Hwange safer, more attractive and more conducive to business and community development,” he said.

He urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations, particularly in areas where maintenance works are underway.

“We appeal to all road users to cooperate with our teams on the ground and to observe all road signs and safety instructions. Together, we can create a safer road environment for everyone,” he said.

The programme is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce accident risks and support the council’s broader vision of building a safer, cleaner and more developed Hwange for residents, businesses and visitors.
