THE Hwange Local Board has partnered with the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) in a major $700 000 roads rehabilitation project in preparation for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) annual general assembly. The event would be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia between 24 and 29 August.
In an interview recently, Hwange Town Board secretary, Mr Ndumiso Mdlalose said the project has since been completed.
“The total cost of the project was about $700 000. We refurbished major roads within our concession such as Derby Drive and Empumalanga road leading to Independence Drive.
“Roads that feed to the main Baobab Hotel and Victoria Falls-Bulawayo highway have also been resealed,” said Mr Mdlalose.
He said Zinara provided gravel and bitumen that covered a stretch of about 8km.
“Bitumen World won the construction tender after we submitted the proposal to Zinara.
“We did preliminary work as the local authority when we patched potholes before the rehabilitation,” said Mr Mdlalose.
He said carriageway markings and sign posts would be done in due course.
Hwange Town Board is in the process of face-lifting the mining town’s infrastructure and amenities ahead of the UNWTO General Assembly in anticipation of an inflow of tourists during the event.
Dignitaries are expected to visit Hwange National Park as well as exploring prospective mining opportunities.
