Midlands Correspondent
A LOWER Gweru village head sustained bruises   and   had   swellings   on   his   body   when    he    was   allegedly   assaulted   by suspected MDC-T activists who accused him of refusing to convene a political meeting. The village head, Mr Lion George Somumbu (56), under Chief Mkoba had to run for dear life after an aspiring MDC-T councillor, Mr Romeo Chirwa reportedly teamed up with his brothers and assaulted him.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Somumbu said he has since reported the matter, which occurred on Wednesday last week to the local traditional leader, Chief Mkoba.

“Mr Romeo Chirwa who is an MDC-T aspiring councillor for Ward 16 approached me and said he wanted to have a meeting in my ward. I then indicated to him that I was a Zanu-PF member and could not convene a meeting on his behalf since it was a political meeting,” said Mr Somumbu.

He said Mr Chirwa then teamed up with his two other brothers, Jerry and Raymond and attacked him.

“I was coming from the garden when I met the three brothers who then accused me of refusing to convene a village meeting so that they could address the people.

“They started kicking me and beating me with open hands. When one of the brothers, Raymond Chirwa picked up a log, I took the chance and fled.

This is how I escaped from further assault,” he said.

Mr Somumbu said he has since reported the matter to Chief Mkoba.

Mr Romeo Chirwa who confirmed the assault on Mr Somumbu said the assault was not politically motivated.

He said the village head was having an extra marital affair with one of the brothers’ wife.

“That old man is flirting with a married woman and even Chief Mkoba who is handling the issue knows that the assault on Mr Somumbu had nothing to do with politics,” he said.
