Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube confirmed the accident, which he said happened near Ndlovu turn-off along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road at about 3.30am on Sunday.
“We received a report that a Mitsubishi Chariot vehicle, black in colour was involved in a road accident that claimed three lives. The driver, Sinyoka Ndlovu (34) of House Number 2, Boundary Road, Hwange and the first passenger who was seated on the front seat and has not been identified were burnt beyond recognition. The second passenger, Clayton Mhlanga (23) also of Hwange died on admission to Victoria Falls District Hospital,” he said.
Insp Dube said it is suspected that the driver was speeding.
“On approaching the 405 km peg, towards Victoria Falls, the driver lost control of the car, which veered off the road, hit a tree and caught fire and in the process, the driver and a passenger in the front were trapped,” he said.
Insp Dube said the other passenger was rescued by people who took him to Victoria Falls District Hospital where he died on admission.
He said a report was made to Victoria Falls traffic police who attended the scene.
“We urge drivers to exercise extra caution on the roads. Speed thrills but it kills and therefore the need to travel at safe speed,” said Insp Dube.
