WILLIAM Banda, a man who has solely stood on his own to ensure volleyball exists in Hwange since 1985, has welcomed the staging of the Zimbabwe Open in Hwange in April.

A keen player and development exponent, Banda said it is an honour for the town to host such a prestigious event.

“It’s an honour for Hwange to play host to such a big event and it will go a long way in boosting development initiatives that we have had over the years.
“School children and community will get a chance to watch competitive volleyball live here in Hwange. We really appreciate the initiative to bring the sport to Hwange,” said the man who is ever present at anything volleyball in Hwange.

A former player who has coached since the late 1980s, Banda believes there is so much talent in Hwange and that the bringing in of top league action has been long overdue.

“We have not had clubs from other towns coming here to play,” said Banda, the legend whose Grizzlers last hosted Unit Fairbridge and Highlanders in the 1990s.
