A 38-year-old man from Macheke was killed last weekend by suspected hyaenas while herding cattle near Nyahuni Secondary School.
The remains of Searchmore Chauke who had gone missing for two days, were recovered in a swampy area about 600 metres from Nyahuni School administration block.
Chauke reportedly went to herd cattle in a bushy area in Nyahuni on February 17 but never returned home prompting his wife to report to the village head, Mr Joseph Chidzi (60), that her husband was missing.
However, there was no police report filed for a missing person as it was hoped Chauke would return home.
On February 20, 2022 Chauke’s body was discovered partially submerged in water, facing upwards with a missing right hand palm, toes and the greater part of his face.
Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, said investigation into the matter had been launched.
“His body parts which include toes, jaw fragments and a whitish substance which resemble brains were also found at various points within a 20 metre radius. His clothes, a red work suit and black bottom were discovered in a bushy area, about 30 metres from the body. They were torn. The body had bite marks all over.
“On February 18, 2022 there were reports that a hyaena had attacked and seriously injured two men, Clifford Biti and Jacob Mutoko, both from Nehumva village, Murehwa which is near Nyahuni Secondary School.
“It is suspected that the same hyaenas attacked the now deceased considering observations made at the scene. Investigations reveal that Nyahuni is infested with vicious hyaenas that are suspected to be infected with rabies.
“Zimparks has already been informed of the incident. The body of the deceased and other recovered remains were conveyed to Marondera Hospital for postmortem.
Meanwhile, police have recovered some bones believed to be those of a person at Waddilove Farm in Marondera.
Last Sunday, a 15-year-old boy from Mombe Village, Marondera was searching for mushroom near the Marondera-Hwedza highway when he saw some suspected human bones between two rocks.
The boy informed one Maxwell Mwayera of Kearl Farm who made a report to the police.
