I don’t compete with Macheso: Ngwazi

RISING sungura star Mark Ngwazi has repeated that he has nothing against Orchestra Mberikwazvo boss Alick Macheso and doesn’t compete with him at any level.

Instead he learns from those that came before him.

Speaking to this publication after a five-star performance before a 20 000-strong audience in Venda, Ngwazi said fighting with a fellow artist is akin to fighting oneself.

“I have no beef with Macheso or any other artist for that matter. We are not in a competition. All that so-called war is in the minds of fans. How can I fight a fellow artist? Our music appeals to our different fans and there is no need for any war,” said Ngwazi.

“I learn from fellow artists, from the likes of Thomas Mapfumo to Ras Pompy,” he added.

Ngwazi was the Zimbabwean representative at the annual Royal Heritage Festival which was held in Thohoyandou in Limpopo Province at the weekend. He mesmerised thousands of South African fans who thronged the Nandoni Dam for the once-a-year concert.

“It is our second time playing at this event and it is an endorsement that our music is being appreciated even beyond our borders.

“I was surprised that fans can now sing-along to our songs and we will thrive to continuously do better,” added Ngwazi. Taurai Madzoka put the icing on the cake as the crowd went wild especially when it came to the chorus.

It was a performance to behold and his top dancer Sekuru Gudo was the crowd favourite with his moves. It was a polished performance from the entire band and won the hearts of many in the predominantly South African crowd.

Ngwazi continues his musical tour with two other shows lined up in Johannesburg and Pretoria in two weeks’ times.

“I promise all our fans to come in their thousands. We have a lot more to offer in the upcoming shows. Our new album Huzukwende has been well-received and it gives us power to keep trying to do even better,” said Ngwazi.

At the weekend event he shared the stage with top South African artists and DJs among them Colbert Mukwevho, Oscar Mbo, Aymos, DJ Oskido, Lamiez Holworthy and kwaito legend Mdu Masilela of the Tshomi Yabana fame, among others.
