IN a bid to escape paying maintenance, a Mutare man said he lost all his sources of income when he was imprisoned for domestic violence.
Elliot Sanyangore was dragged to court by his ex-wife, Moreblessing Maderera who claimed $80 maintenance for the upkeep of their four-year-old child. They appeared before Mrs Yeukai Chigodora
Maderera told the court that she left their matrimonial home after Sanyangore assaulted and left her disabled.
“I nearly died when he assaulted me and that is why he was imprisoned. He left me disabled and I cannot do anything besides vending and I get a maximum of $20 per month.
“Now that he is back from prison, he should give me money to take care of the child and myself. He used to own a farm shop from which he got a minimum of $150 per month. I can manage with $80 from that money,” said Maderera.
In response, Sanyangore told the court that he lost everything when he was imprisoned.
“She sold all the stock when I was in jail and now I have nothing. I also lost links in business and I don’t have anywhere to get money for herself and the child. After all why should I take care of her too? She is no longer my wife,” said Sanyangore.
He offered to pay $20 for the child. Maderera disputed his claims saying he was lying.
“He instructed the shop keeper to take all the groceries to his mother’s rural area where he opened another shop.
“He does not get anything less than $150 from that shop Your Worship,” she said. Mrs Chigodora ordered Sanyangore to pay $40 until the child turns 18.
